The Salt Lounge/Halotherapy

Salt not sliderIntroduction/History:

Salt lounge? If you’re not familiar with them, you may be wondering what a salt lounge is. The genesis of halotherapy (salt therapy/salt lounge/salt sauna) began with the observation centuries ago by European monks that their patients improved faster when treated in natural salt caves. In the 1840s, Dr. Felix Bochkowsky observed that Polish salt miners had far fewer respiratory infections and decreased rates of tuberculosis than the average population. His successor at the state authority for occupational health, Dr. Mstislav Poljakowski, established the first salt clinic near Krakow, Poland, which is still in operation today. Russian physicians began studying halotherapy in the 1950s, publishing many studies on the health benefits of salt therapy and by the 1960s salt chambers opened throughout Eastern Europe. These chambers were used as health sanatoriums and respiratory hospitals. Today, health resorts throughout Europe offer halotherapy as part of their restorative programs.

Clean Salt Rooms & Dirty Salt Rooms:

In the US, most salt lounges are found in spas and massage clinics. They typically contain large amounts of Himalayan (pink) salt (a bed of salt on the ground, large chunks adhered to walls and ceilings), in combination with candles or lights to help aerosolize the salt. Passive, or ‘dirty’ salt rooms attempt to recreate the conditions of natural salt caves by the presence of massive amounts of natural salt. Halotherapy at Haven does not attempt to recreate the appearance of a salt cave but rather the level of aerosolized salt and health benefits of a salt cave by actively micronizing pharmaceutical grade salt, without the other minerals and impurities (which in other contexts, such as dietary salt, can be beneficial) present in Himalayan or sea salt. Using pharmaceutical grade salt, our halogenerator provides therapeutic lprizsaltevels of aerosolized salt (an active or “clean” salt room) and is free of other particulates such as silica which can irritate airways.

The Benefits:

A Halotherapy session is 50 minutes of pure relaxation. High end zero gravity chairs, a quiet and dimmed atmosphere, and relaxing music (bring your own CD if you have a preference) help to induce a relaxing, parasympathetic response. Positive effects of halotherapy include anti-bacterial, mucolytic (helps to break up phlegm and mucus), and anti-inflammatory effects. Used by athletes to improve oxygenation and endurance, halotherapy is also useful for individuals with cystic fibrosis, chronic respiratory conditions, allergies, and chronic sinusitis. As you experience a halotherapy session, micronized particles settle on your skin, improving skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis. The negative ions produced by our halogenerator produce the “clarity effect”, reducing stress and improving energy and mental alertness.

Preparation for your Halotherapy Sessions

Your time in the salt lounge should be therapeutic as well as relaxing. Please observe the following guidelines:

  • Arrive 10 minutes before your session.
  • Wear loose-fitting, comfortable clothes. Areas of exposed skin will experience increased blood flow, and positive dermatological effects–swim suits are permitted. Please refrain from using any perfumes, fragrances, oils, etc.
  • Please leave all electronic devices outside the salt lounge.
  • Drink plenty of water before and after your session. No food or drink allowed inside the salt lounge.
  • Feel free to relax during the session. If at anytime you experience any discomfort or unease, feel free to exit the lounge.
  • Haven Medical, and the salt lounge, is a non-smoking facility.
  • If you are doing both a halotherapy session, and an infra-red sauna (FIR) session on the same day, the halotherapy session must precede the FIR session. It is recommended that patients conclude by rinsing off in the private shower after the FIR session.
  • Lockers are provided to hold your valuables during your session.fb3

Scheduling a session:

Sessions in the Salt Lounge are generally 30 – 60 minutes long. We recommend that you reserve your appointment by phone: 919-969-1414. Walk-ins are possible when the Salt Lounge is available.

Single sessions are $50 (45 to 60 minutes). A package of 10 one-hour sessions, good for one year from time of purchase, is $400.00. The 10-pack of sessions may be used for either FIR sauna or salt lounge sessions. Halotherapy treatments are generally not covered by issuance and it is not necessary to have been seen as a patient at Haven Medical prior to use of the salt lounge (this also applies to the FIR Sauna: see our page on FIR Sauna). Individuals may do a Salt Lounge session followed by a FIR Sauna session on the same day for $80.00.

What to expect in our Salt Lounge

Each session lasts 45 to 60 minutes. You will relax in a comfortable powered, zero gravity chair with optional vibrating massage.

If you are in a group session, please keep conversation to a minimum.

Through the course of a session, many people feel their breathing open up, and individual breaths become easier and fuller.

You may experience the slight taste of salt on your lips. This is normal.

Feel free to exit the salt lounge at any time if you experience discomfort.
